Most people today think of the area of Southgate as "Pennard" and indeed the names have become almost interchangeable. Pennard church, in fact, stands alone on the Western edge of Kittle, just up the road from Parkmill. Despite the confusion with names, this area is very popular with walkers. Parkmill is a very wooded area, set in bottom of a valley and is home to the Heritage Centre, which is well worth a look around.

You would be unlikely to visit Ilston as a matter of course, unless you happened to be staying there or in the nearby Lunnon. It is a quiet, beautiful little hamlet set in the valley above Parkmill, with a stream meandering through the village and past the church - you really could be transported back in time. The former quarry is now a nature reserve.
