Internet scams report

I administer "Gower Holidays", the web site which you are currently viewing. Over the past few weeks many of my clients, who advertise their holiday accommodation on the internet, have received an email which is part of an ongoing internet scam. I feel strongly that the information provided below needs to be on the internet for people to find, in the hope that it will put an end to this scam, or at least warn innocent people to the existence of it.

This is a warning about a fraudulent scam that is in circulation which is targeting people who sell any type of goods or services on the internet. It was first brought to my attention in March 2005. A lady who advertises with me forwarded me a copy of an email that she believed to be suspicious after watching an episode of BBC's Watchdog. Since orignally posting this article I have received responses from people all over the world that have had the same emails, some of them, very nearly falling victim.

How it works...
I recommend that you read the Watchdog article before continuing with this article as it details exactly how the scam works, but very briefly, the buyer sends the seller a cheque for an amount which is greatly in excess of the amount requested. The buyer asks the seller to cash the cheque and send the difference back to them. The cheque appears to clear in the seller's account and they send the difference to the buyer. At some later date, the seller's bank returns the original (buyer's) cheque to the seller as a 'fraudulent cheque' i.e. a cheque drawn on a legitimate account but signed fraudulently and the amount that had been credited to the seller's bank account is deducted, as banks do not suffer the loss incurred by fraudulent cheques.
In addition, as the fraudulent cheques are drawn on legitimate accounts it can take some time for the actual account holder to notice that a fraudulent cheque has been issued before notifying their bank.

What was our experience?
I immediately notified all my clients of the scam, telling them how it operates and assured them that it was not specific to my business. I heard nothing more until mid December 2005 when I received an email from a "Harewood Smith". I noticed that the "To" field on the email was blank and that indicated to me that it was email spam (email that had been sent out to many undisclosed recipients) and so I deleted it. The content of the email was this:

I thought nothing more of it until another client alerted me on the 3rd January 2006. They had entered into email correspondence with Harewood Smith, taken the booking and asked for a deposit to be sent. Subsequently, they were told that a cheque for £5000 had been sent in error by an agent and that once it had cleared, they should contact him so that they could return the amount in excess of the balance to him.

Once again, I notified all my clients who use email, as that appears to be the only method of communication that this scam uses. I was shocked and surprised to find that about seventeen of my clients had received the email and that at least five of them had made a reservation or were in the process of doing so. A few of those provided me with a little bit more information and I discovered that Harewood Smith asks for the reservation to be made in the name of a Dr X (I've omitted his name, for security reasons) at an address in Yorkshire.

I managed to track down Dr X and spoke to him on the phone this afternoon. Over the past year he has had numerous accommodation booking confirmations from around the UK arrive on his doormat. He has not solicited them and he has had to phone each establishment in turn and make them aware of the situation.

Dr X told me, that until today he was unaware of the details surrounding the bookings and the possible issue of fraudulent cheques. The police have previously been involved and based on the limited information that Dr X provided, said that an unknown person making a booking in the name of Dr X was not actually a crime, however, once they are in possession of the full details of the scam, their opinion may change.

In the meantime, I urge you to tell everyone who sells something over the internet, about this scam. As we know from the BBC Watchdog web site, it doesn't just affect tourist accommodation providers in Swansea and Gower.

I have received an email today from a lady in West Kilbride, Scotland. She sent me a set of emails that had bounced back and for between herself and a man called "Greg Martins" who was looking to book rooms last year so that he and a colleague could attend a conference. Having taken the booking, she received an email on 21/07/05 to say payment had been sent to her. She sent many follow-up emails when payment didn't arrive and on 23/08/05 she received an email to say that the dates of the conference had changed to September 25th. She emailed back to say that because she had lost business, until she received the deposit, she wasn't prepared to make any more provisonal bookings for them.

On 04/11/05 she got another email to say that the conference would start on 15th January 2006. They subsequently sent a bankers draft that she and the bank discovered to be fraudulent.
